We will be updating this page with regular updates on our progress in Shelburne to keep residents informed every step of the way to superior service and a superior network from Burlington Telecom.

The Construction Process

Building a fiber-optic network takes time to plan. This includes network design, working with local municipalities for permits, and marking out the build area for dig safes, marking for utilities (required by state law) and then the construction portion begins. There is much coordination and work that needs to be completed before we can connect your home to Burlington Telecom fiber internet services. The Burlington Telecom team is fully committed to working as efficiently as possible while ensuring the work is done accurately. Our goal is to keep you informed as we move through the process and get your home connected as soon as possible.

Network construction has been taking place in phases & consists of:

Progress Milestones

Start

Directional Drilling

Directional Drilling is much
less disruptive than open trenching. This allows for BT to set communication vaults and run fiber throughout your neighborhood with minimal disruption to the soil in the public right-of-way per federal law. Points of entry and exit will typically be where vaults are being set.

Middle

Communication Vaults

BT will use in-ground/flush mount communication vaults within the public right-of-way. They are easy and safe to mow and plow over and can be easily blended into the landscape. Our unique design allows for up to 50% less vaults to be placed in most neighborhoods. They are also more esthetically pleasing to the eye in developments and are rated for 22,000 lbs.

Completion

Distribution Boxes

The end result when signing up for BT: Clean distribution
boxes & penetration points are placed on the side of homes that use BT internet. These boxes will have no loose or hanging wiring and are placed with other utilities to ensure a clean, seamless look. BT’s approach is always to achieve the best result, not the quickest install.

Shelburne Progress Updates

Construction FAQ:

Before construction starts, all public underground utilities (gas, sewer, electrical, and water) must be identified within 72 hours (starting November 1st, 2024 by federal law). Every utility is marked with a different colored flag/paint. After locating them, the fiber-optic cable can be buried in the town right-of-way per federal law (50 feet), avoiding marked utilities.

The colors of the locate flags/paint identify what type of facility is underground:

  • White Flags/Paint: Proposed Construction Route
  • Red Flags/Paint: Electric
  • Yellow Flags/Paint: Gas
  • Pink Flags/Paint: Fiber-Optics
  • Orange Flags/Paint: Communication
  • Blue Flags/Paint: Water
  • Green Utility Paint: Sewer

In order to place our fiber-optic cables within underground neighborhoods, we must install the necessary infrastructure. When you see our construction crews in the area, that means construction has begun. Our crews will be utilizing methods of construction that minimizes impact to the landscape. Our goal is to be efficient and leave the area as we found it by filling the holes and planting grass seed to restore the ground to its original state.

For our fiber network to have a dedicated connection to homes, we will place our vaults within the public right-of-way and try to place them in strategic locations. Our goal is to blend these into the landscape and not take away from curb appeal.

After the fiber is placed and construction is complete our team then tests the connection to ensure it’s performing to our standards

Once construction is completed, you can contact BT (see contact information below) to start the sign up process and schedule an installation which will require the underground fiber-optic cable to be brought from the street/vault to the side of your home. Each end of the fiber is then spliced (“fused”) together from the home, to a vault, for a continuous connection on BT’s network. At this point you are ready for your BT services to be installed via inside installation that we will schedule with you.
